Commissioned By: The San Francisco Girl's Chorus
Premiere: San Francisco Girls Chorus 25th Anniversary Concert
May, 2004; Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA San Francisco Girls Chorus, Susan McMane, music director
An emotional tour de force, this multi-movement work is based on selected excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank. Spanning more than two years of hiding in the annex, the texts and music portray a psychological progression from fear and despair to strength and hope. This moving work for women’s choir includes lyrical vocal lines, lush harmonies, and strong string quartet writing (or piano reduction). The seven movements are designed to be performed as a whole, but are also suitable for performance in various combinations.
Notable Performances:
Bella Voce Brooklyn, NY 2013
Vox Grata Nashville, TN 2013

The meaning and impact of Anne Frank: A Living Voice can be extended beyond the concert hall. An understanding of the tremendous suffering caused by the Holocaust and the lessons of hope and compassion revealed in Anne Frank's story remain vital in today's world. To further this goal, I have developed a set of activities for schools and communities to supplement performances of Anne Frank: A Living Voice. These activities can lead to richer learning, performing, and listening experiences. Click below to see the activities and resources.
