Let Us Sing! (Text: Linda Tutas Haugen, Southern Harmony 74b, F. Price) SSA Choir,
Viola, Bells
Duration: 2:10
Commissioned By: The Badger State Girl Choir
Premiere: The Badger State Girl Choir
December, 2010; St. Mary Parish, Menasha, WI
Dedication: Let Us Sing! was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Badger State Girl Choir, Kevin Meidl, conductor, in honor of Pope Benedict XVI.
A joyful and high-energy piece, this work is based on a tune from the American shape note tradition from The Southern Harmony, 1835, and a text from 1742. Rhythmically active, the altos and viola accompany the melody in the soprano; this evolves to canonic treatment in the second verse, and a change of key and counterpoint in the third verse. Fun, loved by all, and a great opener or closer!
